The Reaper Awards

Dread Central's Uncle Creepy
The Reaper Awards Presented by Dread Central and The Home Video Magazine were held last night in the world famous Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood CA. The night started off with an open bar, followed by some tasty food and then the 1.5 hour award show hosted by the insanely cool Uncle Creepy. All horror, all fun and a lot of fans were on hand as well. For me the night was all about reconnecting with friends and making a few new ones. But with so many people on hand I didn’t even get a chance to say Hi to many of the people that are actually very close to me (like Joe and Adam). Hopefully there are no hurt feelings.

A funny thing struck me as the night went on… this room was actually full of people that I have personally interacted with on many occasions, reminding me just how small the horror industry is. About a third of the people in the room were at my wedding and a handful more at my birthday party last month. The film industry is in a huge flux, a changing of the guard is happening on the tech side and the new breed is changing rules and roles FAST! As it was pointed out on a number of occasions throughout the evening, so many people in the horror industry are genuinely supportive of each other. Unlike most aspects of Hollywood, these people are friends and even hang out socially on a regular basis. Almost everyone in the horror scene today is intertwined with others in some capacity

Today’s horror scene has become a family that wants each other to succeed and make great films together. Hollywood in general could use more of this camaraderie industry wide. The Comedy scene is similar when stand up comics all become friendly with each other, and the music scene is supportive of each other…but how often do we see every facet of an industry come together even as competitors. Case in point; The Reaper Awards were put on by www.dreadcentral.com and without exception, every other major horror outlet was represented. Rue Morgue Magazine, www.FearNet.com www.bloody-disgusting.com www.shocktillyoudrop.com www.iconsoffright.com www.horror.com and of course Fangoria magazine were all there to support the horror genre and our friends at Dread Central.

With the distribution outlets and studio systems crumbling, the film industry is changing by the minute, this one small niche called “Horror” has banded together. From the filmmakers, to the journalists, to the indie studios… It’s a very exciting time to be a fan of Horror films and equally exciting to be a creator in the genre. In my opinion, it’s the golden age of horror all over again.
Great Job Uncle Creepy, I can’t wait to see what you do next year!
