Los Angeles Repo Shadowcast Report 04-24-09

Filed under: horror, repo 14 Responses

In my ongoing coverage about the film Repo! The Genetic Opera, tonight’s event in Los Angeles was quite historic! This weekend marks the 5th month since its official release in November. In that time the film has gone from a weird horror rock opera and box office failure, to an event needing to be seen to believe. Across the North America Repo has been playing NON STOP every weekend since its initial release and the films popularity just continues to grow! Proof of that was seen tonight in San Antonio , with their monthly shadowcast and here in Los Angeles, with a special unannounced guest in attendance ANTHONY STEWART HEAD.

The Los Angeles Repo shows have been special for everyone involved, so it is no surprise that the film sold out, but even without announcing the special guest, the SOLD OUT line to get in was wrapped around the massive complex that houses the Sunset 5. Fans had come from all over, even from far away states for the show. Stars; Alexa Vega, Terrence Zdunich, and Darren Smith, director Darren Lynn Bousman, Music Producer Joe Bishara, DP Joseph White, and Producer Carl Mazzocone were ALL in attendance tonight!

The fans went crazy forming a mob at the sight of the Repo man himself, asking for autographs, taking pictures, and pledging their love to him. Tonight was the night That Anthony Head got to see the insanity that Repo has become… for his first time! Out in the lobby, before the film started, Star Terrence Zdunich was surrounded by adoring fans as well. I cannot even begin to tell you just how crazy the night began. You will have to see the pictures and video to get a grasp of what it was like.

But as cool as it is that Anthony Head showed up for the show, the real stars of the night were the local shadow cast called ADDICTED TO THE KNIFE. The night was truly theirs as they performed every minute of the film live on the stage. The 35+ person cast has come into their own with every move, motion and word rehearsed and performed to the exact moment of the screen. This could have been a Broadway stage play with the amount of effort and talent involved. Hats off to them for doing such and amazing and well put together job!

ATTK cast leaders Bernie Bregman and Vivianna Navarro opened the night with a performance of “Needle Through a Bug” “Come Up And Try My New Parts”, that was almost as good as going to a nudie bar…it was DIRTY! Then Bregman gave a special shout out to the other shadow casts across the country before getting everyone to all Pledge allegiance to REPO, even Anthony Head was chanting along! Bregman thanked everyone involved and even mentioned that LA is one of the places that Rocky Horror and Repo are allies and very cooperative of each other, a fact that is happening nationwide, even though a few old-timer’s don’t agree. I am told that history was made tonight as Co-creator Darren Smith, and recording musician CJ DeAngelus Jr. both performed along with the shadow cast.

I have now seen the film in the theater 29 times, and tonight was easily one of the best and most memorable. I cant even imagine where this is going, or what the other shadow casts are doing…but if I have my way I will find out first hand as I continue to document the fan phenomenon as it is happening. I myself have found my way into the Repo family, with my videos and blogs. To my surprise, people were chanting “Spooky” when Darren announced me, as one of the gang. Tonight’s Genetic Opera was “most certainly” THE PLACE TO BE!!!

I would like to say shame on DLB for holding out on us for so long and making us all sweat just to keep the secret guest a secret! And to think, I was going to make you cookies if you spilled the beans! ;]

The cast is just amazing, aren’t they? Jeeze, yeah. Amazing!! And see that Shilo there? (no, not Alexa, the Shilo-shadow), yeah… that’s my girlfriend. XD *proud*

So glad you made it, SpookyDan! Keep coming back!

*sigh* Jealous! But, WOW! What an amazing night! Just further confirms my desire to not live in Illinois LOL It looks like it was such a crazy fun time. And I can’t wait to see their videos of Needle Through a Bug. Everyone has been talking about how to shadow that one. It is hands down my favorite Repo! song (except for maybe Nancy’s version of Come Up and Try My New Parts… I’m becoming obsessed).

I am anxiously waiting to see some more of your videos online! I’m going to miss you at our next show :( As soon as I win the lottery…

Gina

I’m so jealous. Damn me for living on the East Coast. But it sounded like an AMAZING night.

Alex

I saw your twitter at 1:15 and had half a mind to speed like a madwoman to the Sunset Five. I can’t wait to see your videos!

Brittany/Haunted Lez

DUDE! lol…we didn’t perform “Needle Through a Bug” we performed “Come Up and Try my New Parts”…

But YAY for your amazing words of praise :-D We couldn’t be more proud!

Bernie

It was actually “Come Up And Try My New Parts” that we did, not “Needle Through a Bug”. ;-)

Thanks for everything last night Spooky! Always a pleasure to have you around sir!

Devina

-IS JEALOUS-

aahh that seems so awesome! I wish I could have been there..
And that picture of TZ laughing on stage…
I died.

FYI, it was not Needle Through a Bug, it was Come Up And Try My New Parts!
;)

Kristen

Thank you so much for the awesome review! So glad you enjoyed the show, and as always, it’s a pleasure to have you come to our shows. :)

And you caught me in my GENtern garb before I changed! haha. :P

Kylee

Spooky! The pre-show was “Come Up And Try My New Parts,” :P not Needle Through a Bug.

That aside, thank you so much for coming! We always love having you there, and it really does mean a lot to us!

Nina

Yay for a fantastic review! It’s always great to see you, Spooky! Anthony Stewart Head showing up was just…unbelievably fantastic. I’m still reeling! The show was completely insane, everyone was doing a fantastic job. I can’t wait to see some of the video footage.

The song they did in the preshow was actually Come Up and Try My New Parts, not Needle, although we’ve started talking about doing Needle as a preshow sometime. Could be fun!

Stay awesome, SpookyDan! I hope I get to see you in Riverside on the 9th ;) Don’t want to miss the premier show of the Zaddicts!

Courtney

Do you need another one of us to tell you it we did “Come Up And Try My New Parts” for the preshow? Just in case we didn’t make that clear? XD

Regardless, you are truly awesome, sir, and it was an honour having you at our show, once again, as always!

TaraDammit

“Broadway show…” *BEAMS* When I think of how far some of my fellow castmates have come, and what we are still striving for… Sir, your assessment is thrilling, to say the least.

But, at the risk of sounding cliché, let me say, You ain’t seen nothin’ yet! We have so many more ideas, so many nuances to add, so many costumes to upgrade, so many special effects to work out… Thank you for being here for this show, and I hope we can continue to wow you and the rest of our audiences!
